Cranial Osteopathy for Babies & Children in Harwich
Gentle, expert care to support your child’s development and wellbeing
At Katherine Thurston Family Osteopath, we understand how overwhelming it can be when your baby is unsettled, uncomfortable, or simply not quite right. Our cranial osteopathy service offers a calm, reassuring approach that supports babies and children in a safe, hands-on way — helping their bodies to adapt, unwind, and grow with ease.
Whether your baby had a difficult birth, struggles with sleep, or you're simply following your instincts as a parent — you're in the right place.
What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle form of osteopathic treatment. It uses light touch to identify and ease areas of tension or imbalance in your baby’s or child’s body — especially those that may have developed during pregnancy, birth, or early development.
Although it’s called ‘cranial’, this approach works with the whole body, supporting everything from digestion and sleep to head shape, posture, and emotional regulation.
Common Reasons Parents Bring Their Baby
-
💢 Difficult or assisted birth (forceps, ventouse, caesarean)
-
🍼 Feeding or latch difficulties
-
💨 Reflux, colic or wind
-
💤 Difficulty settling or poor sleep patterns
-
🔁 Always turning the head to one side / flat spot on the head
-
😢 Unexplained crying or general unsettledness
Cranial Osteopathy for Children
As your child grows, their body and nervous system are constantly adapting. Cranial osteopathy can gently support that process — especially when children are:
-
Experiencing growing pains or posture issues
-
Recovering from illness, injury or stress
-
Having trouble with sleep, focus, or emotional regulation
-
Living with sensory or developmental differences
Many parents notice their children feel calmer, more grounded, and better able to cope after just a few treatments.
What to Expect During a Baby or Child Appointment
We take the time to really listen. Your appointment starts with a full discussion about pregnancy, birth and any concerns you’ve noticed. Your baby or child remains fully clothed throughout treatment and may be held, lying down or gently moved while we assess and treat.
The treatment itself involves soft, still hand placements on areas like the head, spine or pelvis. Babies often become very calm, and many sleep during the session. Children typically enjoy the relaxing nature of treatment and respond intuitively to the touch.
We always go at your child’s pace — there is no “one-size-fits-all,” and your instincts as a parent are always welcomed and respected.
Is Cranial Osteopathy Safe for Babies?
Yes. Cranial osteopathy is one of the safest and most respectful forms of manual therapy for infants and children. Katherine is a fully registered osteopath with specialist experience in treating babies and children, and your child’s safety and comfort are always the priority.
