Frequently Asked Questions About Osteopathy in Harwich

Whether you're visiting us for the first time or you're a returning patient, we understand you may have questions. Below you'll find answers to the most commonly asked queries about osteopathy, our clinic, and what to expect.

  • What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a hands-on, holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on the body’s structure and function. It involves diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal problems through techniques like soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, and gentle manipulation. Osteopathy aims to support the body’s natural healing processes and improve overall wellbeing.
  • Is Osteopathy suitable for everyone?
Yes, osteopathy is safe and effective for people of all ages — from newborns and children to adults, pregnant women, and the elderly. Our team tailors each treatment to suit your age, condition, and health needs.
  • What conditions can osteopathy help with?
Osteopathy may help with a wide range of issues, including: Back and neck pain Pregnancy-related discomfort Baby colic and unsettled behaviour Joint pain and stiffness Headaches related to neck tension Sports injuries and muscle strains Postural imbalances
  • Do I need a referral from my GP?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us — either online or by phone. We’re fully registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), so you can trust you’re in safe hands.
  • What should I wear?
We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may be asked to remove some layers depending on the area being treated, but your comfort and dignity are always prioritised.
  • How long is a typical appointment?
Initial appointments (including assessment & treatment): around 1 Hour Follow-up appointments: approximately 45 minutes
  • What happens during my first session?
Your osteopath will begin with a detailed consultation, including your medical history and symptoms. A physical assessment will follow, and you’ll usually receive hands-on treatment during this first session. We’ll also explain your diagnosis and outline your care plan.
  • Will treatment hurt?
Most osteopathic techniques are gentle and should not be painful. You may feel some mild soreness afterward, similar to post-exercise fatigue — this usually settles within 24–48 hours.
  • How many treatments will I need?
It depends on your condition, lifestyle, and response to treatment. Some people feel significant relief after just one session, while others may benefit from a short course of care.
  • Can osteopathy be used alongside other treatments?
Yes, osteopathy works well in conjunction with physiotherapy, GP care, and other health interventions. We’ll happily work with your other healthcare providers if needed.
  • Are your osteopaths registered?
Yes — all of our practitioners are fully qualified and registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Katherine leads the team, ensuring consistently high standards of care across all practitioners.
  • Do you treat babies and children?
Absolutely. We offer cranial osteopathy for babies and children, using gentle, non-invasive techniques to support your child’s comfort and development. Learn more on our Cranial Osteopathy page.
  • Do you treat elderly patients?
Yes. We regularly support older adults with age-related joint stiffness, arthritic pain, and balance issues, always adapting treatment to your needs and health history.
